Alright folks turn off your shitty weekly scheduled tv program and get ready to Bump some Uglies. No, you’re not going to scissor with your favorite blow up doll nor are your going to ride some lame electric bumper cars, but rather turn the volume up because this is going to cause some Ear-Gasms.
I have recently had the guilty pleasure of blessing my ear drums with the new and forthcoming album Beast from the East from Maryland based reggae/ska/punk band Bumpin’ Uglies. Lets just say that this album is the “yeast” of the East, and I’m not talking about that itchy feeling you recently brought home from your one night stand. No, this band is on the Rise and you better come correct! There is no doubt that the new music will stir up all that shit you normally keep bottled up deep down inside.
Front man, Brandon Hardesty, is arguably one of the best lyricist in the scene and has a grit that descends to the depth of your soul. This new anticipated collection of music does just that. It lives in those uncomfortable zones that, generally speaking, are only exposed after some “Hard Liquor.” BFTE wreaks of beautifully driven story telling with tracks like “City by the Sea” and “Crazy” which will have listeners reminiscing their own past with a cruise down memory lane.
Now wipe off those salty tears, and let tracks “Bud Tender” and “Hard Liquor” set the anthem for your night, There is some uncontrollable skankin’ accompanied by mind altering dab sessions in your near future. The deep tones from bassist Dave Wolf and old school style synth from newest addition Chad Wright on the keys will have you grinding like it was your last high school dance. With guest vocals from Zach Fowler of Sun Dried Vibes and Howie Spangler of Ballyhoo!, the east coast reggae scene is coming directly at you and are leaving a permanent uplifting vibe.
Lyrics from “All in Stride” remind us that day to day shit can get dark. Hardesty inspires fans to take it all in stride and that approach is how the Bumpin’ Uglies have organically grown their fanbase. Always so humble, but real to the point. The message in the music relates with listeners and encourages us all, that we too, can some day leave our crappy serving job and pursue our own passion.
Now lets talk about that taste in your mouth, that is left from the subtle but needed shit talking dis track “Radio” where Brandon adamantly sings he doesn’t write song for the radio, he writes songs for the stereo. The timing of the track is impeccable, and is much needed in todays saturated music industry. He is focused on his bars and not becoming a pop star. In a world of robots and copycat artist, these clever lyrics have never hit harder and will have the Uglies bumping this till they blow their speakers. Featured on the track is none other then Tropidelic. Hard hitting fast paced rhymes have you bobbin’ your head for all the right reason.
There is ton of emotion in this album and the word that keeps coming to mind is “Raw.” With almost a decade of song writing in their arsenal, there is no doubt why this 4 piece beast from the East has grown faster then a salty hurricane. Bumpin’ Uglies are setting a standard for persistence and diligence in a dying art of musicianship. This band strives through self promotion, social networking, and DIY marketing. With weekly live sessions on Facebook and Instagram, there is no wonder they have such loyalty in their fan base. Brandon, Tj, Dave, and Chad are some of the most dedicated artist in the scene and continue to give forth a valiant personal effort to write, simply, great music.
